Big 12 Showcase
FSN Midwest - Fridays, 2:30 PM (CT); Saturdays, 11:00 AM (CT)
June 13-14, 2008 ~ Showcase #42 This week's Big 12 Showcase again originates from the Big 12 Conference headquarters outside of Dallas. We'll recap the conclusion of Big 12 baseball, which saw Texas A&M in Super Regional action at Rice. Plus, the reveal continues for Big 12 Showcase's annual postseason awards. This week we announce the four candidates for Performance of the Year - which could be any game-, tournament- or even season-long performance by a single student-athlete or a collection of student-athletes. Once again, the Big 12's official web site, www.Big12Sports.com, will post the nominees in its "Fan Poll" section on its home page and tally the votes. The winners of all awards - Game, Performance and Play of the Year - will be announced on the Big 12 Showcase airing June 27-28, which will also be when the show will exclusively announce the Big 12 Conference's highest honor, the Male & Female Athletes of the Year. This week we announce the nominees for men and women. They are ...
Men's Big 12 Performance of the Year Texas indoor DMR sets world record - The Texas track quartet of Kyle Miller, Danzell Fortson, Jacob Hernandez and Leo Manzano run the Distance Medley Relay in a time of 9 minutes, 25.97 seconds on February 16 at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The time set a world record, crushing the previous mark by nearly 11 seconds (Oregon, 9:36.21). Texas 4x800 swimmers set American record - At the Big 12 Championship on February 27, Texas swimmers Dave Walters, Matt McGinnis, Michael Klueh and Ricky Berens swam the 800-yard Freestyle Relay in an American-record time of 6:10.55. The previous record (6:14.14) had been set last November and included Olympic gold-medalists Michael Phelps and Peter Vanderkaay.
Freshmen help OSU dominate Big 12 golf - Oklahoma State's Ricky Fowler shot a four-round 9-under par at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas to become the first freshman in Big 12 history to win Conference medalist honors. He topped freshman teammate Kevin Tway (-5) for the individual title, while OSU as a team won the Championship by a record 20 strokes over second place.
Andrea Riley scores 45 in Bedlam upset - Oklahoma State's Andrea Riley scored a career-high 45 points, much of it while being double-teamed, helping #25 OSU upset its Bedlam rival, #6 Oklahoma, 82-63. Riley was 12-of-23 from the field, including 4-of-7 three pointers, and hit 17 of 21 free throws. The game was played in front of a record sold-out crowd of 13,611 fans at Gallagher-Iba Arena on January 12. Julia Wilkinson's record-breaking championship - Texas A&M junior swimmer Julia Wilkinson didn't just win the Big 12 Championships in the 100 Freestyle, the 100 Butterfly, the 100 Backstroke and the 200 Individual Medley ... the Canadian-native set Big 12 record times in all four events. She also had a swim in three Aggie relays for Big 12 titles. OSU fish dominates Big 12 golf - Oklahoma State freshman Jaclyn Sweeny, who graduated high school early and was in just her fourth month as a collegiate student-athlete, led the Big 12 Championship from wire-to-wire. She became the first freshman in Conference history to win medalist honors, winning by four strokes over teammate Karin Kennerud, as the Cowgirls won the team title by 27 strokes over Texas A&M. Megan Gibson powers Aggies to WCWS - with All-American ace Amanda Scarborough lost early in the season, senior Megan Gibson shouldered the load for the Aggies in the circle. She won 41 games, while sporting an ERA of 1.20. At the plate, she also hits .337 and led the team with 13 homeruns and 49 RBIs, helping the Aggies reach the Women's College World Series finals.
Big 12 Showcase is a 30-minute promotion of the league with features on student-athletes, coaches, teams and conference championships. The show is shot on location each week at a different Big 12 campus or conference championship venue. In January, Emily Jones took over the hosting reigns from Bill Land. A staple for 12 seasons, Land has assumed full-time television play-by-play duties for the NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs. For the 12th year, the show will be produced by Keith Fletcher of FSN. Big 12 Showcase regularly airs on FSN's Big 12 footprint regions of Southwest, Midwest and Rocky Mountain, plus the Fox College Sports network. The show is also available on the Big 12 web site. Through a unique Conference partnership, ESPN Regional Television is the co-executive producer of Big 12 Showcase. | ||||||
